Solar photovoltaic
cells work by converting light into electrical energy. Because the
electrical energy produced comes from the amount of light available and
as such does not need direct sunlight - just daylight.
PV cells can be produced and fitted in all shapes and sizes and can be
connected either directly to the grid or to a battery pack. Either way
they will significantly reduce the running costs of any building to
which they are fitted.
The cells come as either rectangular panels of various sizes or in the
form of individual solar slates that are integrated into the roof in
the same way as roof tiles. These can be fitted in any configuration or
design. Although the tiles have to be integrated into the roof,
the panels can be integrated or mounted on to the roof.
The only other important factor is the orientation of the photo voltaic
device. The best position for total annual gain faces south with an
inclination of approx. 30 to 40 degrees.
